Chopped pasta salad turns a handful of fridge staples into a bowl everyone reaches for twice. Crisp romaine, tender ditalini, smoky bacon, and tangy blue cheese all get tossed in a creamy honey mustard dressing that pulls it together. It travels well and tastes even better after a short chill.

Why This Chopped Pasta Salad Works
- Crunchy romaine and red cabbage give every bite real texture
- Bacon and blue cheese add salty, savory depth
- The honey mustard dressing balances sweet and tangy in one whisk
- It comes together fast and feeds a crowd at any cookout

This is the kind of side that disappears at potlucks and barbecues. The pasta soaks up the dressing while the veggies keep their snap, so you get creamy and crisp in the same forkful.
Chill the salad for at least 20 minutes before serving so the dressing settles into the pasta.

Why You’ll Love This Chopped Pasta Salad
- The honey mustard dressing is creamy, a little sweet, and bright with vinegar
- This chopped pasta salad mixes tender noodles with crunchy greens for the best of both
- Bacon and blue cheese make it feel a bit fancy without any extra effort

Ingredient Notes
Here are a few notes on the main players so you can shop with confidence. You will find the exact measurements in the recipe card below, so this is just the why behind each one.
- Romaine lettuce keeps its crunch even after tossing, so it holds up better than softer greens.
- Ditalini pasta cooks up small and tender, perfect for scooping with each bite.
- Red cabbage adds color and a sturdy crunch that lasts.
- Bacon brings the smoky, salty hit that makes this salad crave-worthy.
- Blue cheese gives a sharp, creamy tang; swap in feta if you prefer something milder.
You do not need much gear here. A large bowl for tossing, a medium bowl for the dressing, and a whisk will get you there.

How to Make Chopped Pasta Salad
Making this chopped pasta salad is mostly chopping and tossing. Cook the pasta ahead, let it cool, and the rest falls into place in minutes.
- Cook the ditalini until al dente, then drain and cool it completely so it does not wilt the greens.
- Pile the romaine, cabbage, tomatoes, scallions, bacon, blue cheese, and pasta into a large bowl and toss.
- Whisk the mayo, vinegar, milk, sugar, mustard, and honey in a medium bowl until smooth.
- Pour the dressing over the salad, toss to coat, and finish with lots of fresh cracked black pepper.
This recipe serves 6, and it scales up easily for a bigger group. If you want to prep ahead, keep the dressing separate and toss it in up to 2 hours before serving so the greens stay crisp.
Storage Options
Leftover chopped pasta salad keeps nicely, though the greens soften over time. Store it covered in the fridge and give it a quick toss before serving.
- Refrigerate covered for up to 2 days for the best texture.
- For meal prep, hold the dressing and bacon separate, then combine within 3 days.
- This salad does not freeze well, so make only what you plan to eat.
Variations & Substitutions
This chopped pasta salad is an easy base to make your own. Swap what you have and it still comes out great.
- Use feta or sharp cheddar in place of the blue cheese.
- Add grilled chicken or chickpeas to make it a full meal.
- Trade ditalini for rotini or small shells if that is what is in the pantry.
- Stir in diced cucumber or bell pepper for extra crunch.
For a lighter dressing, you can replace half the mayo with plain Greek yogurt. It keeps the creaminess with a little more tang. If you love this style, try my lobster pasta salad for a special occasion spread.

Looking lovely, I do like a good pasta salad, but often they are just pasta and mayo, this looks really flavourful and tasty.
Good morning Melanie. What a great looking pasta salad and sounds delicious! You’re right about everything tasting better with bacon. I’m glad you had a good time in Chicago. I’ve heard there are lots of good foodie restaurants there. I can’t wait to try your salad. Thank you for the recipe!
I cannot wait to try this one! Sounds and LOOKS delish!
Yes indeed that does look wonderful! (using my new favorite pasta too!)
Agree with everyone–it LOOKS so good! I think the chopped red cabbage makes it. Putting it on the short list for Labor Day weekend with family.
Does anyone know if this is 4 cups cooked Ditalini pasta? 4 cups dried would make a ton of cooked pasta.
I made this salad last night to bring to a friends home for dinner. OMG, it was the best. My husband, not a salad lover, ate seconds, and commented on how good it was. The hostess asked for the recipe. It does make a huge salad, and since there were only 4 of us, we have lots leftover for lunch today. I did boil 4 cups of dried pasta, but didn’t add all of it, since it wouldn’t fit in my largest bowl. I will defintely be making this again. Thanks Melanie.
